#5E Top 10: Joel Culpepper's Albums of 2017
EDITOR'S NOTE: I asked some of our friends of 5E if they would like to put forward an End of Year list for our site. Everybody is busy in the Holidays, I wasn't expecting any. But one made time to whip up a quick list for us. That one was Mr Joel Culpepper. If you haven't read the interview I had with Joel last month, be sure to peep it here.
Joel's Top 10 is in no particular order. Enjoy! - Charlie, Lead Editor
Harry Styles - Harry Styles
Surprised by this one, so am I! Honestly the album is great. Really strong. Favourite track “Woman”. The irony!
Syd - Fin
Thundercat - Drunk
It’s probably my most played album this year. Most influenced by on a lot of levels. Continues to take me on a journey. Really pleased I got to see him live this year. Stand out track “Show You The Way”, featuring a hero of mine Michael McDonald.
SAMPHA - Process
Stand out song “Timmy’s prayer” a strong reminder for me how important identity is and just being true to yourself on “Process”
Kendrick Lamar - DAMN.
I didn’t enjoy this as much as much as “TPAB” if I’m honest. It still banged though, heavy!
Stand out track “ELEMENT” and “LUST”
Loyle Carner - Yesterday’s Gone
I love everything thing this geezer is about. The recognition this album is getting and his humble approach to such a vast lesson in real hip hop! Stand out track “Mean It In The Morning”
Nick Hakim - Green Twins
The latest find of 2017 for me. I know I’m late..I’ve shamed myself. The voice, the vibe it’s all been on repeat for weeks. Stand out track “Needs Bees”. Thank you Insecure.
Bruno Mars - 24K Magic
Every time I talk about Bruno i feel I have to say something like “stop sleeping on Bruno” this album is pop unashamedly but it’s also genius. Slick, very good songwriting, he had me at “Finesse” like Bobby Brown came back from the dead to remind us all how bad ass he actually was.
Jessie Ware - Glasshouse
Standout songs for me are “slow me down” and Midnight” Lisa Standfield kind of nostalgia and some Prince in their too I think.
N*E*R*D* - No_One Ever Really Dies
Late entry and just edged out a couple of solid albums. But I can’t deny I’ve had this on loop. Not only that I’ve been excited about them releasing new music for a while. “Deep Down Body Thurst”... First track in and I didn’t go to number 2 for about 2 hours... True story.
